Tummy Tuck Procedure
Before Abdominoplasty
The state of the abdominal wall and overall health of the client must be first evaluated by Petr Hyza M.D. Only than he can recommend the optimal solution (mini-abdominoplasty or full abdominoplasty). Tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia, which means some pre-operative tests and examination by a general practitioner are required. The surgery is scheduled for mornings and client must come with an empty stomach.
During Abdominoplasty
Tummy tuck itself takes about 2 hours. The surgeon will start removing excess skin and subcutaneous tissue from the abdominal crease upwards - around the navel to the arches of the ribs. During the surgery, it is also possible to correct parted abdominal muscles by sewing them together, strengthening the abdominal wall. Liposuction of the hips may also be performed at the same time. To ensure the scars are as small as possible, wounds are closed with a special subcutaneous absorbable suture.
During the procedure and one or two days afterwards, antibiotics are administered to prevent infection.
After Abdominoplasty
Clients are usually hospitalised at Brandeis Clinic for 2 days. The abdominal wall is compressed with an elastic waistband or compression trousers for 5 weeks. Check-ups with doctor are once a week and at least for 2 weeks.
The minimum period of sick leave is 2-4 weeks, depending on the scope of the treatment. Clients should refrain from sports activities for 2 months. Scars from the surgery will be red and stiff to the touch for the first few months, but will gradually fade and soften.
More Details about Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) removes excess skin and stretch marks after pregnancy or weight loss. During a tummy tuck the plastic surgeon removes excess abdominal skin and fat, and can also tighten the abdominal wall to correct bulge or diastasis that resulted from pregnancy.
Usually between 30-50% of the abdominal skin is removed. The plastic surgeon has to create a new belly button. Liposuction may be performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck.
Tummy tuck consists of 3 basic steps:
- Skin removal and tightening
- Subcuataneous fat removal
- Muscle tightening
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Everyone's recovery is different, the recovery time varies from individual to individual. Immediately after a tummy tuck you will feel tight, swollen, and not be able to stand fully upright.
For most patients, the worst discomfort is the first 2-3 days and it gets better after that. By the end of the second week, you should be walking nearly upright but still feel tight. A recovery after tummy tuck last about 4 weeks. It takes about 4 weeks to get back to usual activities without feeling restricted. Vigorous physical activity is limited for 4-6 weeks. You have to be patient with the healing process because it will take several weeks to months to feel well again. You are to let others take care of you and keep in mind the end result. It takes 6 weeks to build up enough scar tissue that you are no longer relying on the stitches in the muscle to hold things together.

If you have a desk job you could be able to return after one week, but it is better if you can manage to take two weeks off for your recovery.
Tummy Tuck Scars
Placement of the tummy tuck scar depends on your abdominal girth, umbilicus position, truncal height, skin tone, skin quality, genetics, skin tension and the presence of stretch marks. With every tummy tuck will come a nice flat tummy and also a scar. The scar is long, but well placed, and hidden in all clothing and bathing suit. The scar will heal and fade with time. Usually by one year however, most scars are fairly well healed and lightened in color. Some scars can even take up to 2 years to lighten. The doctors at the Brandeis Clinic can also use the Palomar Icon laser which is FDA approved for scar reduction.
You are to discuss the position of your incision with your surgeon early in the consultation phase of an abdominoplasty procedure. I inform my patients that most tummy tuck scars are hidden in most styles of swimwear and underwear.
Fibrin Sealant Also Called Fibrin Glue
Fibrin Sealant, or fibrin glue, is a unique surgical hemostatic/sealant/adhesive material that is being used with increasing frequency in a variety of surgical situations. Fibrin Sealant (Human) is indicated as an adjunct to hemostasis for use in patients undergoing surgery, when control of bleeding by standard surgical techniques (such as suture, ligature, or cautery) is ineffective or impractical.
Swelling After Tummy Tuck
A Tummy tuck is one of the most invasive cosmetic procedures and requires a significant amount of time to fully recover. Swelling is a normal part of the healing process. You will see maximum swelling in the first few weeks after surgery. It will start to diminish gradually after the third week. The remaining healing will occur over the next 6 months. During this time can periodic swelling occur, especially at the end of the day.
Factors that can affect post-abdominoplasty swelling:
- Rectus muscle diastasis
- Liposuction in addition to tummy tuck
- Extent of the procedure (mini tummy tuck vs. full abdominoplasty)
- Pre-existing condition of the patient
