Chin Augmentation with Implant
The most common approach is chin reshaping with a chin implant. We prefer Medpor implants which we can attach to the bone with screws and prevent shifting. Multitude of different shapes and sizes of implants can be used, depending on the degree of projection needed.
Chin implant surgery can be comfortably done under local anesthesia with a light sedation for comfort. Big advantage of implant is that it can be removed or changed just as easily if we don't like the result.
We can make the incision underneath the chin, or going thru the inside of the mouth. Going thru the incision underneath the chin is better to prevent infection.
Sliding Genioplasty
It is also possible to move the bottom portion of the chin bone out. It is a technically more difficult procedure. During this surgery the jawbone is cut and screws are placed to secure the bone in a new position. Sometimes it is best to move the lower jaw bone out to correct your bite as well as the chin. The swelling takes much longer to subside in most cases.
The severity of your chin deficiency suggests that you may be better suited for an osteotomy type of genioplasty.
Genioplasty is often done at the time of rhinoplasty (nose job). Chin augmentation is also frequently combined with liposuction of the neck, a neck lift or laser skin resurfacing.
